‘That poor man.’ Helen sat on the beach next to Sheila and Jax where Piper had found them an hour and a half later. ‘I hope he’s going to be all right.’

‘So do I,’ Piper said, bending to pick up a small piece of glass and rubbing the damp sand from it before dropping it into her pocket.

Jax put his arm around Piper’s shoulders. ‘I’m sure he’ll be fine.’

‘I hope so.’ She couldn’t get the image of Colin’s pain-etched face out of her mind, nor forget the fright in Alex’s voice when she’d called him to break the news about his grandfather’s accident.

She resolved to help Alex and Colin in any way possible. Whether her grandmother still had issues with Colin was of little relevance now, as was her own sadness thinking Alex might have a girlfriend she hadn’t known about.

‘It’s hot up here,’ Jax said, taking her hand. ‘Let’s go for a paddle. I know Seamus will be happy to have another swim.’

‘I’m not really in the mood.’ She wished she hadn’t come down to speak to her mother now, but had needed to talk about the upsetting news with someone. Piper knew Jax was trying to distract her, but she would rather go home and wait for Alex to return from the hospital.

‘I won’t take no for an answer,’ Jax said lightly. ‘So you may as well give in.’

‘Fine,’ Piper said, caving in. ‘Come on then.’

She slid her trainers off. ‘Will you keep an eye on them?’ she asked her mum.

‘Of course,’ Helen said. ‘Let Jax cheer you up.’

‘I’ll do my best.’ Jax grinned. ‘Hurry up, before the tide turns.’

Piper punched his arm playfully. ‘Stop bossing me about.’ Once they were out of earshot of Helen and Sheila, she added, ‘What’s so important you needed to speak to me alone?’

‘Who said I need to speak to you alone?’ He grabbed her round the waist and tickled her until she wriggled out of his reach.

‘Stop it, you pain.’

He raised his hands in surrender, his expression suddenly serious. ‘I’m concerned.’

‘What about?’

He stopped walking and before she had a chance to ask what he was doing, bent to pick something up. He wiped whatever it was with his thumb and handed it to Piper.

She looked at the piece of worn glass. ‘Thanks,’ she said, slipping it into her pocket. ‘So, tell me.’

‘I spotted you coming back with Alex on his bike the other evening.’

Had he seen them kissing? ‘And?’

‘I can tell you like him.’

She didn’t bother to deny her feelings. ‘Go on.’

‘Mum told me about your gran and Alex’s grandad having history. And not a good one.’

Piper wished her mum had kept quiet. ‘That’s right, but what’s that got to do with me?’ she asked.

‘Piper, we both know how loyal you are. I’m concerned that if you get too close to Alex that his grandfather and your gran’s differences, which, let’s be honest go back a hell of a long way, might cause problems going forward.’

‘I shouldn’t think so,’ she said.
